Leicester Open Meet (14/15th April 2012)

Fifteen West Norfolk swimmers competed at the City of Leicester Open Meet with some excellent results and many personal best times being achieved. Awards were presented to the top three swimmers in each event and the club took home 8 gold, 5 silver and 6 bronze medals in total. The gala was a Level 1 meet which allows the swimmers times to be used for qualifying for the Regional and National Championships later this year. Nathan Wells was in superb form throughout the weekend and swam some excellent races winning the 13/14 years 400m freestyle, 200m freestyle and 200m IM, and becoming the first swimmer in the club this year to obtain qualifying times for every event at the East Region Championships at UEA in June, showing his superb ability across all four strokes, a massive achievement. Other gold medals went to Sophie Green in the 100m backstroke, 100m butterfly and 200m butterfly, and Josh Gray in the 100m breaststroke and 200m breastroke. Once again the great results show the hard work and training that the swimmers continue to put in.

Multitude of trophies and medals at this year’s Norfolk County Championships

West Norfolk swimmers had great success collecting a multitude of trophies and medals at this year’s Norfolk County Championships which were held at UEA, Norwich and Waterworld, Thetford, competing against swimmers from all over the county. The championships got off to a great start on the first day with every West Norfolk swimmer gaining a PB in their individual events, showing their continued commitment to improve their times which can only be achieved with their hard work in training. This success continued throughout the galas with numerous PB’s and many club members reaching finals in their age groups and gaining top six placings, along with several Age Group Champions and some championship records being broken. Qualifying times for the East Region championships were also obtained throughout the competition and so far the club have thirteen members who have qualified, Sophie Green, Keely Empson, Hannah Janisch, Sarah Bowling, Abbie Whiting, Gaby Balls, Josh Gray, Alex Murray, Cameron Murray, Mark Collins, Nathan Wells, Joe Wells and Archie Holman, for the competitions which take place in Basildon and UEA in the summer, with a few more swimmers competing at meets over the next couple of weeks hopeful of gaining qualifying times. BAGCAT and Top Boy and Girl awards were made to the top three swimmers in each age group and these were presented to 15 years - Keely Empson (1st), Sophie Green (2nd), Ryan Sykes (3rd), 14 years - Nathan Wells (1st), Oliver Kenny (3rd), 12 years - Abbie Whiting (2nd).

50 Fifty Club

It is intended to establish a 50 Fifty Club to help support the Swimming Club.

The basis of the idea is that there will be a monthly draw held.  Tickets for each month will cost £4 and will be sold on an annual subscription basis i.e £48 for 12 tickets (Less than £1 per week)

Of the money collected 50% will go to the swim club and the other 50% will become the prize fund.

The prize fund will be split 3 ways at the ratio 55:30:15.   For example if 50 tickets are sold in a month, the club will receive £100 and the prize fund will be £100 split as follows: 1st £55, 2nd £30, 3rd £15.

To make this work we need volunteers to run the draw and sell tickets.

Please consider helping out, this is an easy way for the Club to generate extra funds and a chance for the parents to get some cash back!

The Rules have been drafted all that is missing is you.

Please direct your questions in the first instance to website@westnorfolksc.co.uk

Swimming trials (last trials was 29/04/2012, No new dates have been arrange).

Click here for directions to Downham Market swimming pool

If you have any questions please contact liaison@westnorfolksc.co.uk

or phone: 07748 496490

Why is it running?

The trials are primarily aimed at identifying young swimmers with the potential to progress with their swimming and provide the pathway to competitive swimming.
Most swimmers will initially join our development squad, however the trials coach will recommend which squad is most suited to progress the swimmer after the trial.

Who is it aimed at?

Swimmers who:

  1. Are able to swim 50m continuously without stopping and with good technique
  2. Must be able to swim Front Crawl, Backstroke and Breaststroke for a minimum of 50m with good technique.
  3. Must have an idea of butterfly, especially dolphin kick
  4. Must be able to tread water for a minimum of 60 seconds
  5. Must be keen to take their swimming further

What happens after the trials?

All successful children will be required to fill in joining paperwork and pay a monthly members fee before starting swimming with the club, parents/ guardians to complete the paperwork depending on swimmers age.
Those who are unsuccessful on this occasion will receive advice to enable them to continue with their swimming development.
Other trials will take place during the year and swimmers are welcome to attend again.
